Robert Knott was born in Oklahoma. He grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1973. He then lived in Norman and worked for a Tulsa-based drilling company. He also worked in Alaska, Kuwait and Texas before he became an actor, director and writer.

He made his acting debut in "It Takes Two" (1988). He then played Jesse James in the mini series "Oklahoma Passage". He then usually takes supporting roles in Western movies like "Desperado: The Outlaw Wars".

He gained his first success as a screenwriter in Appaloosa. Ed Harris is a close friend of his, without him, I think, he wouldn't have been the continuation author of the Cole / Hitch series.

His first novel IRONHORSE was published in 2012.
